The Department of Modern and Recent History was founded 17th of January 1805, together with the first 28 departments of the University. Such prominent scholars and teachers as I. Sreznyevsky (1837-1847), P. Lavrovsky (1851-1859), M. Drynov (1873-1906), K. Ilyiunsky (1907-1909), A. Pogodin (1910-1919), V. Buzeskul (1880-1931), A. Scaba (1934-1951), A. Kovalevsky (1951-1969), S. Sydelnykov (1956-1977) taught at the department.
