International Scientific Conference “XVII Cyril and Methodius Readings” with the topic “Educational and Cultural Life of Central and Eastern Europe: the Western Model and National Traditions”. The conference concentrated on following issues: 1. Between Byzantine and Roman tradition: Christian influences on the Central and Eastern Europe in the early Middle Ages: organization of schools in Byzantium and Occidental Europe; Christian religious missions and expansion of education: Oriental and Occidental versions; educational work of Cyril and Methodius among the Slavs; foundation of literary schools in Okhrid and Preslav and development of Glagolitic and Cyrillic written language; education and culture in Kievan Rus: Byzantine, South Slavic and Occidental influences. 2. Peculiarities of the development of education in Central and Eastern Europe: from the medieval scholasticism to rationalism of the Age of Enlightenment: the role of religion and Church in the formation of cultural horizons of the medieval and Renaissance person; universities and academies in Central and Eastern Europe: common European traditions and local specificity; the phenomenon of humanistic school of XVI – middle of XVIII century: the instrument of interdenominational struggle, manifestation of the universal Renaissance culture, factor of formation of local identities of early modernism; school and university libraries – transmission channels of ideas, knowledge, cultural patterns; educational trips to Western and South Europe as a mean of mastering new educational and cultural practices; Reformation, Counter-Reformation and Enlightment in Central and Eastern Europe: peculiarities of perception and reflection of ideas in the field of education. 3. Educational dimension of the period of nation constitution in Central and Eastern Europe (end of XVII – beginning of XX century): the influence of Great French Revolution and the Napoleonic period on the education: struggle of liberal and conservative approaches; transfer of the idea of the University and its adaptation in Eastern Europe; new university model: German models and local realities; University as a factor of awakening of the nation and construction of national projects; secondary school – genetic origins, national and religious peculiarities. 4.Between democracy, authoritarianism and totalitarianism: higher education and schools in 1918 — 1945:educational policy in the process of formation of the state: governmental control and academic freedoms;education and an instrument of national minorities assimilation; “Cultural revolution” in USSR – social mobilization and construction of a “new man”; daily life of education during war and occupation; clandestine universities – educational alternative for oppressed nations and factor of the national liberation struggle. 5. “Sovietisation” of educational space and deformation of national traditions (second half of 1940s – 1980s): Adaptation of the system of education to the needs of “socialist” society: the directions of transformation, resistance and consequences; education at a time of “Cold War”: whether the intellectual “iron curtain” and cultural isolation from the occidental world were dense; religious educational institutions and their role in the upbringing of intellectual traditions; the universities in the countries of Central and South-Eastern Europe – education cells of the “new intellectuals” and centers of dissident movement; peculiarities of school development in the States of the Soviet bloc and Yugoslavia. 6. Return to Europe: post-communist transit and integration into European educational space: teachers and students in anti-communist revolutions of 1989–1991; teaching and teaching staff of the High school is a conservative or reformist force; education system reform in 1990s is the liberalization and the westernization or the revival of old traditions?; the Bologna process: peculiarities of implementation in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe; quality assurance tools and processes of internationalization in the European Higher Education Area; globalization and “onlinization” of the education – new challenges and opportunities in the process of modernization of the countries of “Eastern partnership” of the EU. The total number of submitted reports is 133 (including 98 direct participants from Ukraine, Bulgaria, Poland and 35 indirect participants). Program of the conference . On 20 October 2017 Karazin Kharkiv National University hosted café debateon results of international research project «Horizon 2020» EUNPACK (role of the EU in prevention and transformation of conflicts in Ukraine and third countries). School of Young Diplomat The School of a young diplomat was created in 2017 on the initiative of the Youth Council of the Kharkiv City Council. The School began to work in October 2017. Students from universities, school and NGO organizations attended an introductory practice at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Some of the participants have become "EU Young Ambassadors" and are actively involved in EU youth programs. Topics of prof. M. Stanchev lectures: 1. International Scientific Conference on the topic "1918 In The History Of Central-Eastern Europe: To The 100th Anniversary Of The Announcement Of The Ukrainian People’s Republic Independence And To The 100th Anniversary Of The Polish State Rebirth", Three panels were performed during September 27-28: “Ukrainians and Poles in the conditions of the First World War" (8 reports)”, “Ukraine in 1918: State-building Processes" (11 reports), “1918 as the Point of Bifurcation of the Contemporary History of Central-Eastern Europe (13 reports)”. In addition, 5 reports were announced during the roundtable “Ukrainian-Polish Relations in 1918-1921: the Lessons of History and Contemporary Challenges”. Therefore 40 of 57 reports announced in the program were done (including 10 reports were done by Polish scientists and 30 reports by Ukrainian scholars, that represented classical and pedagogical universities, academic institutes and museums, from 11 cities: Kharkiv (11), Kyiv (8), Zhytomyr (2), Mykolayiv (2), Ivano-Frankivsk, Poltava, Uzhgorod, Uman, Kherson, Cherkasy and Chernivtsi.
